Benguela is a three-piece instrumental band that has been playing together for a couple of years. They skillfully combine a variety of sounds, musically transporting you through many musical genres.
All their music is improvised.
Benguela,( the name refers to the cold current running up the west coast of Southern Africa and also apparently the name Angolans gave to the stick they used in war which had a great big knob on one end) is made up of 3 members. Brydon has recorded and performed with many projects including his other current band ELX. Alex Bozas is caught between trying to be a professional photographer and gorilla guitarist. Ross has toured the length and breadth of this country over the last 8 years with bands such as Urban Creep and Landscape Prayers.
Benguela have pieced together thirteen songs from three years of recordings captured live at various dodgy venues in and around Cape Town. They have, with this their second album, brought a bit of the old Formula 1 philosophy into play, in that you the audience are drawn in by the margin of error. Whether its a bum note or tempo slur, one gets spur of the moment inspiration / creation and its natural conclusion: reckless abandon or the total collapse thereof.
